regrowing old produce? My little experiment!

Every little bit helps, right? Well, then I saved my family $3.50 this week! OK, really this was more like a fun experiment I’ve been wondering about.  After using the last of my green onions and a few heads of romaine lettuce, I put it in the window in a bowl of water to see what would happen.

Check this out:

For this picture, the green onions on the far left have been in that water for about 5 days. You can see the dead part where it started from. (that’s like 6 inches of green onion there!)

NOW for the Romaine lettuce. IMPORTANT NOTE: See how my little romaine’s are different sizes? For the smaller one, I just put it directly into the cup of water. For the larger one, I poked a few holes in the bottom of the (stalk?) and put it into water. So, I guess it helps grow faster with the holes!! (this is about 5 days of growth)

I put the little container of green onions in the window yesterday morning and you can see about an inch growth.

Seriously – this was my little lettuce head only 1 day after I put it in water! (see the darker green part sprouting up?) Those guys just don’t want to give up!!

I know, I know.. this type of produce is not that expensive, so why bother? Well – IT’S FUN! And totally cool to see that you can regrow food out of something I probably would have just thrown away. (I will totally not judge you if you want to dig in your trash right now, go ahead.. do it)

Hum.. wonder what else I can use this method on!? I’m going to try a few more things and report back. Let me know if you try something else and have success!!

Making the most out of life,

Andrea
