remembering Grandma – with a jewelry cross

I don’t know about your grandma, but both of mine have boxes of costume jewelry. My grandma Avis and I would spend hours when I was a kid sorting through her pieces and organizing them. (Actually, I think a lot of her jewelry is real not costume so if she’s reading this and gasping I thought I would add that)

Earlier this year my Grandma Bonice passed away. She had a lot of costume jewelry that was given to all the girls in the family. But where is it now? It’s in a box. Will I wear it? Maybe? Lose it? Break it? (I have 2 small kids) Maybe?? The thought terrifies me.

My cousins & I used to play dress up in her clothes, jewelry and all.. it really brings back memories.. (check out this picture – circa 1986?)

A few weeks ago during bible study, my mind started to drift. Then, I spotted it. Across the room, in a black shadowbox – the most amazing looking cross. After taking a closer look, I realized it was made up of jewelry. Earrings, brooches, necklaces. It is so beautiful. I instantly snapped a picture and sent it to my sister for approval…

(Also, I was thinking if I used hot glue in theory if I changed my mind one day I could take them off and peel off the hot glue and the jewelry would be undamaged, right? I’ll have to check on that)

I really think my Grandma Bonice would love it if she knew her jewelry was made into a beautiful cross that everyone in my family looked at every, single day. It’s still hard to believe that she is gone… but maybe seeing a little piece of her each day will keep her memory alive even more.
