I have been making my own laundry detergent for years, but recently tried making fabric softener. Back in March I wrote a blog post for Houston Moms Blog with recipes for DIY detergent and fabric softener. (click here to read that post)
At the time I made fabric softener using Suave conditioner. It has made our clothes smell really, really nice! I finally ran out this week. Today, I used the rest of the bottle of conditioner for a second batch.
As you can see I had a little “helper” along…
Two batches of homemade fabric softener cost me about a dollar! I used the first batch for 2 months. This second batch will probably be the same.
This is the $1 conditioner I prefer to use:
For DIY Fabric Softener all you do is mix up 3 cups of water, 1 1/2 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of conditioner with a whisk. I also added a few drops of Tea Tree essential oil to this batch. I have been putting about 1/8th of a cup in each load of laundry. I have a front load washing machine and it has worked fine.
I recently started collecting various essential oils and doing research on what to do with them. I burned breakfast a few days ago (sorry hubs) and the house smelled terrible. I pulled out my tiny “dip” crockpot, went outside and pulled a few twigs from our rosemary plant and added lavender essential oil!
DIY Home Freshener using essential oil
Directions: fill up crock pot a little more than halfway full with water, add rosemary twigs and 10 drops of lavender essential oil and turn on the crockpot without the lid.
The water will heat up and the house will smell amazing! You can add water as it cooks out. I’m doing more research now to come up with more combos!
Let me know if you try out these recipes!
