Why wait to use it? Put Heirlooms on Display

My grandma Avis thinks like I do. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Why have something “nice” if it’s just going to be put away in a drawer somewhere? (You guys know I have a soft spot for using antiques and hand-me-downs in my everyday life.)

While on a visit a few weeks ago, I noticed something beautiful. Grandma Avis framed a pin that her mother used to wear. It’s just lovely. She put a pretty blue fabric inside a small frame and attached the pin in the center. Simple and brilliant! It’s placed right beside a picture of her mother. What a loving tribute.

My mom uses shadow boxes to display her grandma’s belongings… check it out:

When I called my mom and asked her to send me these pictures, she reminded me that my framed art is what gave her the idea.

I framed a few pieces of unfinished tatting.

Before I framed these, they were sitting in a box for probably 50 years.

Remember this? After much debate, I finally came up with a way to reuse old post cards from my Grandma Alma’s collection.

I was torn about just framing them because I wanted to see the backs of the post cards too. Click here to see more on how I display the postcards so you can look at the fronts and backs.

Need another idea?

My sister and I have a bag of costume jewelry from my Grandma Bonice that we will eventually make into crosses. I wrote a short blog about this too, but here is the picture again – beautiful, right?

Or, you can just go the simple route and put stuff out on shelves. This tea cup and saucer belonged to Brandon’s grandmother.

Each time Claire paints, we use an old tablecloth of my grandma’s for her to sit on.

Claire knows this belonged to her great-grandma… (Her Gigi’s mom. She was very crafty too!)

I really encourage you to dig into your closets and find something that is stored away for safe keeping. If you have a cherished heirloom just waiting for a special occasion – Get it out of that drawer and USE IT!!

I truly hope this inspires you to honor someone you love.

Making the most out of life,

Andrea

  1. […] I’m all for donating old clothes, but sometimes the sentimental items are tough to let go of. Especially since a lot of my baby and toddler clothes have been used by both of my girls! I have memories of my girls crawling around in certain t-shirts or precious pictures with it on. What to do? Store it in a box forever? Not my style. (See:heirlooms on display post) […]

Superb blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything.

Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or
go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally confused ..

    Any recommendations? Bless you!

    1. There is a lot out there! I used wordpress because it was easiest for a beginner and honestly, I liked the formats! I was using the free version until about 3 days ago, so yes the free version works great! Otherwise, I would say just start writing! You are the only person who can be you, so don’t overthink that part. GO for it! Good luck!!!
